Thirugnana Sambanthar

Sambandar was born to Sivapada Hrudiyar and his wife Bhagavathiar who lived in Sirkazhi, Tamil Nadu. They were Shaivite brahmins. When Sambandar was three years old his parents took him to the Shiva temple where Shiva and his consort Parvati appeared before the child. His father saw drops of milk on the child's mouth and asked who had fed him, whereupon the boy pointed to the sky and responded with the song Todudaya Seviyan, the first verse of the Tevaram. At the age of three, he is said to have mastered the Vedas. Sambandar died in the Tamil month of "Vaigasi" at the age of sixteen at his wedding.

Songs: thoadudaiya seviyan vidai yae'riyoar thoove'n mathisoodik kaadudaiya sudalaippodi poosi yenn u'l'langkavar ka'lvan aedudaiya malaraan munai:naad pa'ni:nthaeththa aru'lseytha peedudaiya piramaapuramaeviya pemmaa nivanan'rae. Meaning: the God who wears a ring in his ears the God who comes on the holy Bull the God who wears the flawless white Moon on his head. the God who smears the ash from the cremation ground - the thief (God) who stole my heart - the God who blessed Brahma (the one on the Lotus) when Brahma prayed earlier -  He is none other than the Perumaan (the Lord ) himself of Piramapuram.

Sambandar's image is found in almost all Shiva temples of Tamil Nadu. He is depicted as a dancing child or a young teen with his right forefinger pointing upwards, reflecting the legend where he credits Parvati-Shiva for what he has.
